School-Based Programs

Nearly 45% of MCPS students are enrolled in free or reduced meals at school. Manna’s school-based programs aim to support Montgomery County students and their families by providing supplemental food assistance via the Smart Sacks Weekend Bag Program and School-Based Pantry Program. Use of the ingredients provided and sustained healthy eating is encouraged through educational materials and/or recipes throughout the school year.

Smart Sacks Weekend Bag Program

Manna Food Center partners with schools in Montgomery County and community organizations to support students and their families with nutritious, shelf-stable food to supplement meals over each weekend. Each bag contains nutritious staples such as whole grains, lean proteins, low or no sodium canned vegetables, fruit, and more.

School-Based Pantry Program

Each month, Manna’s pantries offer accessible food at schools, which include both fresh produce and shelf stable nutritious staples. This program came about as a way to respond to feedback around providing fresh produce and perishable items. The pantry offers students and families a choice model which can reduce food waste and promote dignity.
