Volunteer Opportunities

Manna has volunteer opportunities for both individuals and groups. Volunteers who work at Manna's warehouse on weekdays must be at least 18 years of age. Unless otherwise noted volunteers under the age of 16 must bring an adult supervisor to work alongside them in group activities which take place during evenings and weekends.

Farmers' Markets

(seasonal from May - November)
Staff a table at the Rockville or Olney Farmers Market and encourage people to buy a few extra fruits and vegetables to donate to Manna. We usually schedule one family, group or individual for each market day. Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Family Box Packing Days

Manna Food Center Family Volunteer Days are a roaring success. Volunteers gather at the the Gaithersburg Manna Food Center warehouse to fill boxes with non-perishable food that are later distributed to clients. This is very hands on and requires physical activity and the ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Volunteers should be age 7 and up; recommended age is at least ten due to the heavy lifting and manipulation of tape guns.

Space is limited and a confirmed reservation is required. Reservations open on the first of the month before the event, i.e. July 1st for August dates. To reserve a box packing space, email your requested dates to volunteer@mannafood.org along with a phone number and the number of spaces requested. Maximum # of spaces per family is 5.

We have five Family Packing Days each month -
1. First Sunday 3pm
2. Second Thursday 7pm
3. Second Saturday 9am
4. Third Monday 7pm
5. Fourth Thursday 7pm

Plant a Row of Produce to Donate

Manna Food Center can never get enough fresh fruits and vegetables for our clients. If you are a gardener, help us while enjoying the fun of playing in the soil. Just plant some extra vegetables or fruits and then deliver the produce to the Manna Food Center. We accept donations of all sizes - Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm.

Food & Fund Drives

Please remember Manna Food Center can ALWAYS use donations of food and funds. Organizing a Food & Funds drive is a worthwhile and fun activity for your family, community group, neighborhood, business, or faith based organization. See How to Hold a Food Drive for Manna in 10 Easy Steps and contact us at fooddrive@mannafood.org for additional support.

Manna Ambassador

Help Manna reach out to the community by becoming a Manna Ambassador. Staff a booth at community events or speak to a class of students or a community group about hunger. Help us raise awareness about hunger in Montgomery County.

Group Volunteer Opportunities

We have opportunities for groups to come in and volunteer at Manna Food Center on weeknights (Monday - Thursday after 5pm) and on weekends. Contact volunteer@mannafood.org to learn more information about what opportunities might be available for your group and how to reserve a date on our Volunteer Calendar. Please include in your email your group name, the number of group members, ages of the group members and if you are interested in a weeknight or weekend opportunity. Keep in mind that our weekend dates are limited and do fill up quickly.

Food Distribution

Monday-Friday, adult volunteers (18 years of age or older) help with a variety of tasks geared towards creating boxes of fresh food that our clients will receive on that same day. It involves, taping boxes together, cutting boxes apart, sorting through food, putting food in boxes, and helping move boxes out to client cars. The work is physical and volunteers should be comfortable standing on their feet and comfortable with light to moderate lifting (5 - 25 pounds).

Administrative Support

Periodically, we are in need of volunteers who are able to help us with office administration tasks such as copying, typing, data entry, filing, stuffing envelopes, etc. The volunteers may "float" between our 2 office areas, performing a variety of tasks. Scheduling is flexible.
