Honoring Karen - A New Name for Smart SacksIn 2005, Manna partnered with Whole Foods and Montgomery County Public Schools to create a program to help feed hungry kids when school meals are unavailable. Our Smart Sacks program has grown over the years to serve over 50 elementary schools in Montgomery County, sending home a backpack of food with over 2,000 children a week. The program grew immensely under the direction of Manna's Karen A. Goldberg, former Director of Smart Sacks.
In October 2012, Karen passed away after a valiant fight with cancer. In her honor, Manna is renaming the program she tended to as the Karen Goldberg Smart Sacks Program.
As we continue to fight hunger and feed hope in Montgomery County, Manna will honor Karen's exceptional work with Smart Sacks and children by continuing to support students and serve the community. If you would like to remember Karen and support the Goldberg Smart Sacks program, please see our donation page or contact Alexandria Scott, Director of the Goldberg Smart Sacks Program.
